Since T20 is a fast-going game, the essence of fresh legs and talent in the side are a must at the highest level, and with the help of experience, any team can beat anyone on their day. The current Indian team requires a lot of young talent to build it for the future with already seniors Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra having bid farewell to the T20Is.

With the bilateral away T20I series Zimbabwe vs India scheduled in July’s first half, the selectors thought it was the best time to experiment and even-handed more responsibilities on Shubman Gill who will be making his T20I captaincy debut.

Keeping the workload in mind of the key players who had a hectic year, the management has decided to send a second-string side for the Zimbabwe bilateral T20I series and appointed dynamic young batter Shubman Gill as the skipper. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube who were part of the T20 World Cup squad that won the title in the Caribbean were able to secure a place in the 15-member team.

It’s the first National call-up for Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, and Tushar Deshpande who have earned their spot following their impressive performances in the Indian Premier League. Dhruv Jurel who had already made his debut for India in the whites earlier this year against England got his maiden call-up in tri colours. He will be considered as a backup wicketkeeper batter for Sanju Samson.

The batting department looks splendid, especially at the top with Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad who both failed to cut into the final 15 of the T20 World Cup squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal is the other front-runner to open the innings in the series, he didn’t get a game when India lifted the title for the 2nd time in the Caribbean and needs to alter his position if needed. Abhishek Sharma who scored 484 runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL this year will find it difficult to seek into the top 3.

Riyan Parag who batted entirely at the No.4 position for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024 will be relieved to find a place in the Indian squad for the first time and his chances of playing in the starting eleven from game one are high. He had a dream run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he finished as the top run-getter with a tally of 510 runs in 10 matches and extended his form to IPL where he emerged as the 3rd leading run-scorer, amassing 573 runs in 14 innings.

Rinku Singh who was unfortunate to miss out on the final 15 of the Indian T20 World Cup squad will bat in the middle order and serve as a finisher. Nitish Kumar Reddy was named in the initial squad and will be unlucky to miss out on the tour due to injury and he will be replaced by all-rounder Shivam Dube. Washington Sundar is set for another comeback, his services weren’t properly utilized by Sunrisers Hyderabad due to the impact player rule, and he needs to capitalize on the opportunity to cement his place in the longer run.

Ravi Bishnoi is the only genuine tweaker in the mix and he will be accompanied by finger spinner Washington Sundar.

It’s a challenging job for Shubman Gill to work with a fresh set of fast bowlers including the likes of Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar, and uncapped Tushar Deshpande. Khaleel Ahmed is making a comeback into the National setup after November 2019, he has 13 wickets in 14 T20Is.

It’s an ideal time for Avesh Khan to make a name for himself who has been given chances here and there over the last year. He was outstanding for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024, picking up 19 wickets in 15 innings. The 27-year-old right-arm pacer from Madhya Pradesh is the most experienced bowler in the current Indian squad having played 20 T20Is.

Mukesh Kumar who made his debut last year in all forms of the game now has a combined 24 wickets. He may not be the quickest but his experience will hold the key for Men in Blue.

With a rich of talent, India is expected to come out on top without losing a game in the forthcoming Zim vs ind bilateral T20I series.

Player to watch out for in ZIM vs IND

Shubman Gill:

The stage is set for the next big thing in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill who has been rated highly for his batting skills. From being part of the U-19 World Cup winning squad in 2018 to representing the country in the World Cup, he has come a long way. He is one of the only five Indian players to score a century in all forms of the game.

He has been the regular for India in ODIs and Tests but is still figuring out ways to cement a place in the regular T20I squad. He holds a decent record in the shortest format, scoring 335 runs in 14 matches at an average of 25.76 at a blistering strike rate of 147.57.

Zimbabwe Squad:

Sikandar Raza (c), Faraz Akram, Brian Bennett, Johnathan Campbell, Tendai Chatara, Luke Jongwe, Innocent Kaia, Clive Madande (wk), Wessly Madhevere, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Wellington Masakadza, Brandon Mavuta, Blessing Muzarabani, Dion Myers, Antum Naqvi, Richard Ngarava, Milton Shumba

The 38-year-old Sikandar Raza will lead the young Zimbabwe squad for the upcoming 5-matches T20I series against India. Belgium-born, Antum Naqvi has received his maiden T20I call-up, however, his inclusion into the Zimbabwe National side is subject to confirmation of his citizenship status.

The selectors have taken a tough decision in dropping Ryan Burl, Joylord Gumbie, and Ainsley Ndlovu. All-rounders Brandon Mavuta and Wessly Madhevere completed their suspension for drug use hence included in the squad. Premier pacer Tendai Chatara has earned a recall after being dropped for the bilateral series against Ireland and Bangladesh.

Due to their commitments elsewhere experienced cricketers Craig Ervine and Sean Williams aren’t considered for selection.
